Lesson 4:2

Deportations and the Train

Chicken Soup Under the Tree

Initially the family, together with the entire Jewish community, were marched to a football field. Rosa (Ivor’s mother) placed the Chicken Soup Under a Tree.

They then made their first railway journey from Mako to Szeged, where there was an established ghetto, before being taken to an abandoned brick factory.

Describe how this journey was made, how many kilometres this journey was and how long it would have taken. (Remember trains would have travelled very slowly.)

Why did Rosa hide the chicken soup?

Describe how this shows both resilience and hope.
